Middlesbrough agree deal for £15,000-a-week "devil" to join on Deadline Day

Middlesbrough have sealed a deal to add an exciting and versatile talent to Michael Carrick’s ranks on transfer deadline day, according to reliable sources.

Middlesbrough deadline day transfer updates

Boro have been relatively quiet but shrewd in the market so far, making six additions to Carrick’s first team, with the standout signing Bristol City’s Tommy Conway, who has already opened his Championship account for the season despite making just two substitute appearances so far.

They are one of a number of second tier clubs expected to be busy on Friday however as they push towards one of the most open promotion battles in years, fine tuning the squad and hoping to make a couple of more additions. Josh Coburn has left to join Millwall on loan, while Liam Cooper could be a target as a free agent and Boro are expected to win the race for Ipswich defender George Edmundson.

The most exciting deal of the lot has now been agreed however, with Liverpool’s Ben Doak set to join on a season long loan, as confirmed by The Times’ Paul Joyce on X this afternoon. How much, if any, of his £15,000-a-week salary will be covered by his parent club is not yet clear.

Carrick and Co. had to fend off competition from Hull City for the Scotland youth international, who was included in their EURO 2024 squad only to be forced out with injury and replaced by Conway.

"Devil" Doak is better than Jones

Doak is at his best on the right-wing, so Carrick is likely looking at him as an upgrade on Isaiah Jones, who for all his industry down that flank is not a regular provider of end product, scoring 13 goals in total for the club since 2021.

Liverpool’s 18 year-old on the other hand, who has limited first-team experience due to his place behind Mohamed Salah in the pecking order, has shown in the UEFA Youth League just how prolific he can be, registering four goals and four assists in eight showings for the Reds, a goal contribution per game.

He will also offer his new manager depth across the attack however, capable of playing on both wings and even spending some time up front, with Scotland manager Steve Clarke hinting at his potential there last year.

Ben Doak for Liverpool

The teenager has also drawn high praise from his teammates at Liverpool, with captain Virgil van Dijk in awe of his pace and trickery: “I remember when he came on against Villa away last year, and he did that stepover and went past the full back.

“He’s very exciting, very direct, one-on-one. I call him a Tasmanian Devil with the way he is buzzing around, he’s just so quick. If his decision making gets better – and he has all the time in the world for that – then he could definitely be one for the future.”

Liverpool and Boro will of course hope that decision making can be fine-tuned over the next 12 months, igniting a promotion push.

Jofra Archer 'happy to go back in the bubble' after confirming Test fitness bid is on track

Fiery outing for Sussex shows progress in recovery from elbow and finger injuries

ESPNcricinfo staff13-May-2021Jofra Archer demonstrated that his return to fitness is firmly on track following a fiery performance for Sussex on the opening day of their LV= County Championship clash with Kent at Hove, and confirmed he would be ready to step back into the England bubble if selected for the two-Test series against New Zealand, at Lord’s and Edgbaston next month.Archer claimed 2 for 29 in 13 well-grooved overs, with both of his scalps coming in his opening four-over spell, including his England team-mate Zak Crawley, who was caught behind for 7. Kent were rolled aside for 145 inside 55 overs, with Archer’s fellow England prospect, Ollie Robinson, also starring with 3 for 29 in 18 overs. It was Archer’s first Championship appearance for Sussex since September 2018, and potentially his last of the season too, given that the county has no fixture in next week’s round of games – the last that England’s Test players will be able to play ahead of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s, beginning on June 2.But, after a low-key outing for Sussex’s second XI against Surrey last week, he assuaged many concerns about his recovery from both a long-term elbow injury, and an operation to remove a shard of glass from the middle finger of his right hand.”It’s great to play again with the [Sussex] lads who I’ve played with nearly all of my career,” Archer told the ECB Reporters’ Network afterwards.”My fitness is fine, I thought I bowled okay. I played in the second team last week and it’s good to get some confidence and I felt fine. I bowled in short spells for protection in case we had a long day but it was overcast, which helped a bit. There was a bit of management, but it all worked out.Related

“With the [elbow] injury I have tried not to get too frustrated,” he added. “If I’m fit, I guess I will play in the Test series and I feel alright. I would ideally have another game next week but we’re off and then we play Northamptonshire. I don’t know what the plan is but I’d be happy to play again before the Test series. I’d be happy to go into the bubble again.”Archer is sure to be joined in the bubble by Crawley, who made a career-best 267 against Pakistan in last season’s England campaign, but he’s looking forward to heading to Lord’s with the bragging rights after getting the better of their short-lived duel.”I bowl to Zak Crawley in the [England] nets and I have done that quite a bit,” Archer said. “Obviously, you’re never out in the nets so it was good to get him out here, with umpires.”It remains to be seen whether Robinson, too, has done enough to earn a Test debut, but after claiming 28 wickets at 13.35 – and with England indicating that they will offer chances to some new faces – the signs are so far promising.”Hopefully Ollie Robinson will get his [England] chance this summer,” Archer said. “We all know what he can do, he’s a talented bowler and his stats prove that.”

Initial plans to form a breakaway competition – which involved 12 leading clubs from across Europe, including Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Barcelona and Real Madrid – were met with widespread opposition in 2021, leading to the project being shelved.

The concept never disappeared for good, though, with Real president and ‘Galactico’ fan Florentino Perez leading calls for its introduction. According to , a revised format is now being drawn up in a bid to wrestle power and control away from the Champions League – which is run by European football’s governing body.

DID YOU KNOW?

Madrid-based company A22 have been brought on board to advise those at the heart of the Super League proposal. The plan now is to introduce a tournament that involves 96 clubs spread across four divisions, with the ultimate winner coming from the top two tiers – which would feature 16 teams and see eight games played in home and away fixtures.

With knockout stages taken into account, the winners would play 18 games in total – with a similar format in place for the two lower leagues. John Hahn, co-founder of A22, has said: “We have listened intently to a broad group of clubs, leagues and fans and with these changes believe we have a lot of support. We are not expecting the public support of clubs at this time, logically that will come following the official recognition of the Unify League.”

PSG tipped to move for OlmoBarcelona at risk of losing summer signingContract registration still unresolvedFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

After links with Arsenal and Manchester City this month, PSG are now reported by to be keeping tabs on Olmo's bizarre situation at Barcelona. The French giants have been tipped to make a move if things are not resolved in Catalonia, with PSG coach Luis Enrique already familiar with Olmo from the Spain national team setup.

Olmo's future is only uncertain because of Barcelona's continued financial strife. The Euro 2024 winner joined for €60 million (£50m/$63m) from RB Leipzig last summer but couldn't initially be registered in accordance with strict La Liga salary limits until the club were able to offset Andreas Christensen's wages due to injury. But with the Dane returning to fitness, Barca are back to square one unless they can raise the necessary revenue. A legal challenge to try and force Olmo's registration has already failed, which is a desperate blow given the possibility of the player walking away as a free agent.

DID YOU KNOW?

Barcelona will remain financially hamstrung as long as they stay on La Liga's harshest spending rules, allowing them to only reinvest a fraction of money received or saved. The club has been rumoured several times in recent months to be close to returning to normality, but that has yet to materialise. These limitations are also why Ilkay Gundogan was let go on a free transfer and why Nico Williams was out of reach last summer.

Barcelona need to find money that will allow them to register Olmo before it is too late and they risk losing him. One option could be to sell other players, with Christensen one of those linked with a January exit and Newcastle United an apparent suitor.

Deco wants £140,000-p/w Aston Villa star Barcelona have tracked for years

Whilst Aston Villa deserve high praise for their recent rise, they could yet suffer from their own success with a major European club eyeing a move for one of Unai Emery’s key men.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans are gunning for back-to-back top four finishes in the Premier League to ensure that last season was no blip and that they’re very much here to stay among Europe’s elite. So far, on that front, they’ve ticked plenty of boxes, with two wins in three games and just the one loss coming against title contenders Arsenal in a game that could have gone either way.

Emery can ease Bailey blow by unleashing Aston Villa's "top young player"

Unai Emery will have to make a change or two ahead of the clash against Everton

ByRoss Kilvington Sep 14, 2024

Those in the Midlands have the summer transfer window to thank for such a solid start. They spent the last few months adding to Emery’s squad and managed to lose only Douglas Luiz and Moussa Diaby in pursuit of avoiding any profit and sustainability trouble.

One man who has represented the impressive nature of their business more than anyone is Amadou Onana. The central midfield arrived from Everton in a deal reportedly worth as much as £50m and hasn’t looked back since, scoring twice in three Premier League games. It’s the type of start that has instantly won over those at Villa Park, but also seemingly attracted interest from elsewhere.

According to MARCA, Barcelona chief Deco still has Onana in his sights ahead of 2025 as the La Liga giants look to finally replace Sergio Busquets. They were initially reportedly interested in the Belgian at Everton only for Villa to swoop in and land his signature. Now, they could ensure that his next move comes around even quicker.

Just 23 years old, there’s no doubt that the midfielder has a big future ahead of him, but it remains to be seen whether that future will be in the Midlands or in Barcelona.

"Excellent" Onana is destined for the top

Amid financial instability and the soap opera that is Barcelona these days, a move to the European giants may not carry the same attraction as it once did, but this is still one of the most historic clubs in history and one that is still hard to resist as a result. It’s a move that the likes of Robert Lewandowski have been unable to turn down even from Bayern Munich and now potentially a move that Onana will be forced to ponder.

As Aston Villa continue their rise, it’s becoming more and more clear that Onana is a player destined for the very top, be that with the Villans or elsewhere in years to come. The Belgian has been catching the eye ever since his time at Everton, with Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig describing his performance against Arsenal in the 2022/23 campaign as “excellent”.

Earning a reported £140,000-a-week at the club, only time will tell whether Onana’s form takes him beyond Aston Villa, who could yet fall victim to their own rapid rise in recent years under Emery.

Ned Eckersley, Liam Trevaskis rescue Durham as Naveen-ul-Haq falls apart at the death

Afghan seamer taken out of attack for two high full tosses in 19th over that costs 24

ECB Reporters' Network13-Jun-2021Durham pulled off what will go down as one of the more extraordinary wins in their T20 history as Leicestershire Foxes threw away what looked like a nailed-on victory in the Vitality Blast at the Uptonsteel County Ground.Chasing 169 to win this North Group match after Scott Steel hit 53 against his former team-mates, Durham were 108 for 8 in the 14th over and still needed 49 with only four overs left. That came down to 23 off two after Gavin Griffiths conceded 15 in the 18th but winning still looked a tall order.Yet former Leicestershire man Ned Eckersley and Liam Trevaskis saw their side home with an over to spare as the Foxes conceded 24 in a calamitous 19th over that was started by their overseas player Naveen-ul-Haq and ended by Ben Mike after the Afghan fast bowler was ordered out of the attack for bowling two head-high no-balls.Naveen’s first and sixth balls were called for height, the second of which Eckersley ramped for four, adding nine to the total just from no-balls. In between came a two, two singles and a leg-bye and a four for Trevaskis when he should have been caught at deep midwicket, Arron Lilley losing the ball in the sun.Naveen’s second no-ball meant he could not bowl the extra delivery. Mike took over and Eckersley clubbed the free hit for six over long-off to complete a 36-ball half-century and win the game to a stunned silence from the home crowd.Earlier, Durham had restricted the Foxes to what looked like a below-par 168 for 9, with Lilley hitting 31 but Matty Potts and ex-Leicestershire seamer Ben Raine taking three wickets each. Having been 117 for 3 in the 14th over, the Foxes stumbled from 155 for 4 to 166 for 9, losing five wickets for 11 runs in 15 balls.Steel’s 53 included five fours and two sixes, Lilley’s 31 off 21 balls with sixes off Paul Coughlin over midwicket and two down the ground in consecutive balls off Scott Borthwick’s legbreaks.Durham’s reply was off to a blistering start as David Bedingham blasted 38 off 19 balls with three sixes off left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson’s opening over. At 58 for two after 6, they looked well placed but after a bad call by Raine saw Cameron Bancroft run out they lost five wickets for 20 runs in 22 balls.Lilley, who had Jack Burnham caught at short third man in an attempted reverse sweep and Coughlin leg before, took his third wicket as Borthwick missed the ball trying to work to leg but a career-best 3 for 26 was small consolation for what happened at the end as Trevaskis took four and a six over deep midwicket off Griffiths and Naveen’s afternoon turned into a nightmare.

A feast for the soul at a very different bowl as Lancashire seal epic against Sussex's rookies

Two-wicket win sealed after late onslaught, despite heroic efforts from young visitors

Paul Edwards23-Jul-2021
On evenings like this, which are rich beyond easy measure, one wonders why the incomparable game seems periodically determined to tear itself to tatters. On evenings like this, when Lancashire have contrived to win a match they’d all but lost, one wonders why people patronise or disrespect the Royal London Cup. Nobody was guilty of such insult at Sedbergh today. On evenings like this, when pride is fighting a battle with disappointment in the hearts of the Sussex players, one wonders why it is thought foolish to give young cricketers their chances to succeed and, yes, fail. But then evenings like this do not come around too often. And, of course, there is nowhere in the world like Sedbergh…For sitting on the boundary of this sacred space it is difficult to think ill of our world. And for those lucky enough to play here no task is beyond them. Just ask Danny Lamb…But first, consider, if you will, these two enormous bowls. The first is built almost entirely of concrete and glass and is situated in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham. It is an intimidating place, especially during Ashes Tests or short-format games; a stadium conducive to fervour; a harsh arena, especially since its redevelopment just over a decade ago. Our second bowl has taken rather longer to emerge. Sedbergh’s Cricket Field is ringed by the Howgill Fells, the seeds of whose formation can be dated back to the Paleoproterozoic era, somewhere between 160 and 250 million years ago. This can also be a harsh land on winter mornings when snow-covered Crook defies ascent but not on white-wisped afternoons such as this when Baugh Fell wore all the browns and purples a bounteous God might devise and Winder stood proud and green against a blue dome.So much, so worlds apart. Yet on this fourth Friday in July both these grounds staged fine cricket matches and does not that simple truth suggest that it is time we put aside damaging Brexitesque enmities and instead marvelled at a game that could incorporate the raucous brevity at Edgbaston and the slower but unimaginably rewarding rhythms at Sedbergh?Go on, have another view of the ground…•Getty ImagesCertainly the large crowd that filled this endlessly enriching ground seemed more than content as they saw this match unfold. And by the conclusion of what became a wonderful struggle mere content had become rhapsody, particularly for home supporters, as Lancashire recovered from 115 for 7 to beat Sussex by two wickets, thanks substantially to Lamb, whose 69-ball 84 not out brought deep-throated roars from the spectators ringing this starkly gorgeous arena.A Lancashire win had hardly seemed possible, let alone likely, when Archie Lenham marked his 17th birthday by dismissing George Lavelle and Rob Jones in the space of four balls in the 27th over. That left the home side needing 156 to win and all they had on their side was time. So Lamb and Tom Bailey pushed the singles, drove the occasional four, saw off the leg-spinners, Lenham and Will Beer, and refused to put the hammer down until 102 runs were needed from the final ten overs. They were determined, in other words, to take it deep. This thoughtful approach was not surprising. Lamb proved his batting ability when he made a Championship century at Canterbury in April and Bailey has five first-class half-centuries to his credit. What was more remarkable was the pair’s smooth transition to outright attack with both batters hitting a couple of sixes before Bailey was stumped off the impressive Lenham for 45 to end the 112-run partnership, Lancashire’s highest for the eighth wicket in List A cricket.Liam Hurt joined Lamb and proved a reliable compadre as the game reached its climax. Sussex brought back the seamers who, nearly three hours earlier, had reduced Lancashire to 19 for 3. But the game was nearly gone. Lamb lifted both Henry Crocombe and Joe Sarro for sixes before Hurt drove the boundary that completed the victory with six balls to spare. Cheers echoed round the fells and they followed a sweat-covered Lamb into the Knowles Pavilion. Only a brave man would tell any of those voicing their delight that this was a development competition, that its results don’t matter or that they were playing second fiddle to anything at all.Related

Danial Ibrahim's teenage rebellion helps paper over Sussex cracks

Sussex bowlers chip away in close contest after Dan Ibrahim's vital half-century

And anyone wishing to dispute the importance of the outcome of this classic match would have done well to look at the Sussex players as they stood despondently on the outfield in the sharp evening sunlight. Neither their surroundings nor the fact that they had played a full part in this great game mattered to them in the slightest. Nine of this Sussex team were making their List A debuts. Tom Haines, their skipper, is 22 years old. Yet rather than disintegrate in the manner some pundits expect of young teams in the Royal London, they had made a perfectly competitive 270 on a pitch that reflected wonderfully well on the skills of Sedbergh’s groundsman, Martin South.Four of Haines’ batsmen made over 40 with Oli Carter’s 55 being perhaps the best of a fine set. But 16-year-old Danial Ibrahim’s 46 offered further evidence of a rich talent and while nothing can diminish the deep disappointment this evening, the words of the coaches should offer balm. None of Haines’ players looked out of place. This has been a summer for the green and carefree at Hove and surely travelling supporters will be thanking their stars they’d taken the trouble to make the 650-mile round trip. They have a young team of which to be proud.Yet even on an evening such as this a quiet note of gentle warning should be sounded. The spectators who ringed the Cricket Field know what they enjoy and it is the game’s longer formats. For very many of them days like this take their place in the wider context of an English summer. That includes visits to towns like this in the Howgill Fells with its thick-walled farmhouses, its haymaking, its gentle peace. Until you visit Sedbergh you cannot fully understand how beautiful it is. A man might visit this place and find that he can never leave.

Senior Man Utd figures now unhappy with Erik ten Hag for one main reason

Senior figures at Manchester United are now believed to be unhappy with manager Erik ten Hag for one specific reason, according to a new claim.

Ten Hag feeling the heat at Man Utd

Last weekend’s 0-0 draw away to Crystal Palace in the Premier League hasn’t done much to take the pressure off the shoulders of the Dutchman, whose future continues to be under the microscope on a weekly basis.

In fairness to Ten Hag, United actually played well for chunks of the game at Selhurst Park, having more of the ball than the Eagles and creating enough opportunities to pick up all three points.

The bottom line is that the Red Devils failed to win for a third time in five league outings this season, however, and their current 11th-place ranking is nowhere near good enough, in terms of wanting to get back into the Champions League. Granted, it is still very early days, but the table is already taking shape and Ten Hag’s men don’t want to start losing further ground on their rivals.

A recent report has claimed that the 54-year-old is safe currently, with the likes of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Dan Ashworth, Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox all happy to give him more time. Replacements for him have still been mooted, however, including Max Allegri and Simone Inzaghi, with the latter inspiring Inter Milan to Serie A title glory last season.

Senior Man Utd figures unhappy with Ten Hag

According to Give Me Sport, senior Manchester United figures are unhappy about the lack of goals on show under Ten Hag currently, with further unrest on show at Old Trafford.

The report states that “patience is beginning to wear thin” with the Red Devils’ profligacy in front of goal, even though they have largely been performing well in a defensive sense. Only five league goals have been scored in as many games, three of which came in one game away to newly-promoted Southampton.

Erik ten Hag

For all the reports claiming Ten Hag isn’t under genuine threat of being sacked currently, it does feel as though there is still plenty of speculation over his future, which is going to be extremely hard for him to change.

The former Ajax boss deserves undoubted credit for winning the EFL Cup and FA Cup in his first two seasons at Old Trafford, not least because he beat Manchester City in the final of the latter last term, but the negatives still arguably outweigh the positives under him.

Despite some fans possibly having high hopes of a genuine top-four push in 2024/25, United are already in the bottom half of the table, and it is still hard to identify a genuine playing style, with performances often requiring moments of individual brilliance, rather than grinding down teams in the way City, Liverpool and Arsenal do.

Premier League Table: Latest EPL standings for 2024/25 season

ByStephan Georgiou Apr 22, 2025

Sunday’s home clash with Tottenham feels like a big afternoon for Ten Hag, and defeat against their rivals could crank up the pressure on him. That being said, a convincing win may ease the level of scrutiny, so he needs his attackers to step up, with no player scoring more than once in the Premier League yet this season.

Kane was all about power at that point, as he regularly slammed the ball into the back of the net. The 31-year-old has tinkered with his run-up over the last 12 months, with a stutter added that allows him to spot any early movement from the goalkeeper.

That routine served him well against Gladbach, with Kane telling afterwards of why he changed his approach and how he has perfected it: “I normally do it every week, the day before a game. Kane’s strike sealed a hard-fought 1-0 win for Bayern in their latest Bundesliga fixture, but he saw the fewest touches of any outfield player. The 31-year-old added on why that is no cause for concern: “I don’t think I’m starved of touches. It’s about being effective when you do have the ball, creating chances and getting in the right areas. You are going to have games like that.
