'A very special effort' – Kane Williamson on Neil Wagner, who bowled with fractured toes

NZ captain says the search for WTC points had made the team push harder for victory

Saurabh Somani30-Dec-2020New Zealand’s dramatic win against Pakistan in the first Test, achieved with less than five overs remaining on the last day, had several notable contributions, but the one that will be remembered most perhaps is Neil Wagner’s effort of bowling 49 overs across two innings despite two broken toes.New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who has been in the XI in 47 out of Wagner’s 51 Tests, said he had never seen a bigger effort from the left-arm quick. Wagner took 2 for 50 and 2 for 55 in the game, and had said after the third day’s play that “unless they carry me off on a stretcher, I’m going to try and do everything I can”.Watch cricket on ESPN+

Williamson revealed that Wagner had lived up to his words, it being as difficult as ever to take the ball away from him to end a spell.”People talk about the size of his heart in terms of what he does on the cricket field, but to have a couple of broken toes, and he was in a lot of pain – I want to be careful here because he’s probably going to listen to this – but he was in a lot of pain,” Williamson said. “He was going off and getting injections and numbing his foot. We tried to use him when the injection was taking effect. It was kind of unique for all of us.”His appetite and motivation to be out there and try and make a difference for the team is huge. I think we haven’t seen any bigger than the effort he put in across this Test match with a couple of broken toes. He just kept running in, and obviously it had an impact on his ability to operate at 100% but he still came in and got the breakthrough like he does for us so often when he’s at full strength. A very, very special effort from Wags, one that the team appreciated. We needed him out there, and he delivered.”Wagner made perhaps the most crucial breakthrough of the day, when he had centurion Fawad Alam gloving a catch behind off an attempted pull when on 102. That breakthrough had come shortly after Kyle Jamieson had trapped Mohammad Rizwan lbw for 60 to end a stand worth 165 runs which had spanned more than 63 overs.”He’s quite difficult to take off when he’s bowling,” Williamson chuckled when asked about Wagner getting through so many overs. “To be honest, I don’t look at the number of overs (he has bowled). He was very fizzed, obviously the injections were taking effect and so he was able to run in. He did say that ‘when I get my injection I’m much better off bowling a long spell’.Related

“And when you add the carrot of a potential Test win, and you’ve perhaps taken a wicket, I know fast bowlers in particular get their second or third wind. He loves it, and he loves having the ball in his hand and it’s very difficult to get it out.”Pakistan almost saved the day, but were finally bowled out for 271 after batting for 123.3 overs in their second innings, having entered the final session at 215 for 4 with Alam and Rizwan fluent, and all results possible. Williamson said New Zealand had kept pushing for wickets because it was worth going for victory even at the cost of a possible defeat.”We still had that hope of picking up a wicket and then feeling like things might be able to happen from there,” he said of the final session. “For us it was trying to win at all costs. Going into that last session we still clearly had that opportunity as did Pakistan, and also an opportunity for a draw. But in terms of the context of the World Test Championship, losing it in trying to win it was still a better bet than anything else. It was nice that we were able to come away and be on the right side of it.”It made for an incredible game of cricket. Another incredible one against Pakistan. We’re two very, very tight teams that have been going down to the wire. Great to come away with the result and the excitement in finishing so late in the piece adds to that.”The second and final Test begins in Christchurch on January 3, and victory there would put New Zealand on sound footing to finish in the top two of the World Test Championship and contest the final. Williamson however, said that potential incentive was secondary to winning the Test they were taking part in.”It’s about playing good cricket. The things that surround it and the attention and context which is brought in with the Test Championship, is great,” he said. “It’s given everybody something else, an added spice to Test cricket. But that’s in the back of peoples’ minds, not at the forefront of what we need to control and the effort that needs to go into try and play our best cricket against a very strong side in Pakistan. They showed that out there today and we’ve seen it on a number of occasions that they’re a terrific team in all areas.”

The Red Devils acted swiftly after Erik ten Hag departed from Old Trafford earlier this week as they roped in Amorim from Sporting CP on Friday. The 39-year-old manager heads to the Premier League after guiding the Portuguese club to four trophies in the last four years, including two Liga Portugal titles.

As Amorim prepares for a new challenge in England, Manchester City boss Guardiola extended a warm welcome to the young coach. However, he did not want to share any advice for the new United manager. Interestingly, Amorim's penultimate game for Sporting CP will be against City in a Champions League clash on Tuesday.

WHAT PEP GUARDIOLA SAID

Speaking to reporters, the 53-year-old said, "Welcome to United, to England. I congratulate him, [we will speak] next Tuesday. I'm not the right person to give advice to colleagues. They have a lot of people at United who can give information about what is happening at United."

Americans Abroad: Weston McKennie and Tim Weah put on a show, Ricardo Pepi scores brace and USMNT captain Tyler Adams makes long-awaited return

GOAL reviews the takeaways from Americans playing in Europe, including big moments for Adams, McKennie, Weah and Pepi

With Christian Pulisic unexpectedly off for the weekend, with flooding in Bologna forcing a postponement of their match with AC Milan, the focus turned toward the U.S. men's national team's supporting cast. So many key players were missing during the October international break, largely due to injury. Several are on the mend and several made huge impacts this weekend as we start looking ahead to the November window.

When healthy, Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie and Tim Weah are among the USMNT's most important players. All three were vital at the 2022 World Cup and, despite all of the changes since, all three will almost certainly be important again on the road to 2026. Yet, to start the season, all three have had ups and downs. This weekend, though, they were on the field in big moments for their clubs.

Adams made his long-awaited return from injury, while McKennie and Weah were the defining forces of a major derby in Italy, scoring and assisting in what was no doubt the game of the weekend in Europe. Meanwhile, Cole Campbell, a player that very well could be the future of the USMNT made his debut in Germany for the world's biggest talent developer, and Ricardo Pepi, No. 9 contender, sent another message to Mauricio Pochettino with a big-time brace.

It was a busy week of Americans Abroad, and GOAL breaks it all down.

GettyAdams is back

It was a welcome sight for American soccer, to put it lightly. It was a welcome sight for Bournemouth, too. Tyler Adams is back on the field, and the hope is that it's for good this time.

Adams has been in battling the injury bug essentially since the 2022 World Cup. He went down in March 2023, keeping him out until the start of the 2023 season. In that time, he moved to Bournemouth after that injury prevented him from saving Leeds from relegation. He made just four appearances for Bournemouth last season before injuries took him out again. Now healthy, Adams made his first appearance of the season, coming off the bench in a 1-1 draw with surging Aston Villa.

It's a small step, but in some ways also a monumental one. Adams has played for the USMNT in the midst of all of this, famously scoring a stunner against Mexico before also featuring at the Copa America. That always looked like Adams at 70 or 80 percent max, though. He never quite looked himself and, ultimately, he paid the price for those moments by missing more time on the club level.

For the USMNT to be the best team it can be, Adams needs to be there. He's clearly still the best No. 6 in this group when healthy. Mauricio Pochettino will love him but, as they say, the best ability is availability.

Hopefully, Adams can feature in the USMNT's upcoming November camp, at least to just get acclimated to life under the new boss. If we've learned anything, though, it's that Adams should take it steady as he ramps up ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

AdvertisementAFPMcKennie and Weah headline wild derby

Juventus may or may not be title contenders this season. Their 4-4 back-and-forth duel with Inter Sunday showed they can go toe-to-toe with anyone, but there are still points to prove for the Old Lady.

And whatever Juventus do accomplish, McKennie and Weah are assured to be a big part of it, just as they were in an incredible derby.

McKennie assisted Juve's opening goal, setting up Dusan Vlahovic to give his side an early equalizer. Six minutes later, Weah got a goal of his own, scoring his second of the season. McKennie wasn't done in the second half, either, as he assisted Kenan Yildiz's goal to bring Juve back within a goal. Yildiz, of course, was the hero from there, scoring again to earn Juve a point with a 4-4 draw, but McKennie and Weah were major catalysts in Juve's goal explosion.

Both have a point to prove under new coach Thiago Motta, and both showed that they can directly contribute to goals. The result wasn't ideal but, for McKennie and Weah, the performance was timely as both look to get going after stop-start beginnings to the season.

Getty ImagesWelcome to the show, Cole Campbell

Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna and now Cole Campbell – the Borussia Dortmund-USMNT connection continues on.

Campbell became the latest American to make his senior debut for Dortmund on Saturday, as he came on in the final minutes of a 2-1 loss to Augsburg. Given the scoreline, this wasn't a ceremonial appearance – Dortmund thought he could influence the game. He only got four touches but, hey, it was still a big night.

Dortmund are high on Campbell, which means America should be, too. The teenager made the one-time switch from Iceland to the U.S. earlier this year, committing his future to American soccer going forward. It's was a big risk, in a way, but Campbell is betting on himself to be a USMNT star – and given the track record at Dortmund, in particular, that bet feels safe.

There is no better club in the world at turning young players into stars. Campbell is the latest to arrive on that conveyor belt looking to become a regular at Dortmund. If he does, if he follows in the footsteps of players such as Pulisic, Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland – no easy task – he'll be one heck of a player. It's early, though, but, even so, it's worth keeping an eye on Dortmund's newest rising star.

Getty ImagesPepi just keeps scoring

When Ricardo Pepi plays, he scores. When he starts, it feels like he scores multiple.

That's what happened on Saturday, when Pepi accounted for two of PSV's six goals in a win over PEC Zwolle. That takes him to five goals in just 340 Eredivisie minutes. It's an absurd goal haul, even for a team as dominant as PSV.

That's what PSV is: dominant. Through 10 matches, they're unbeaten with a +29 goal difference. After winning the league last season, PSV look like they're going to cruise again this time around.

In addition to Pepi, it's also worth shouting out Malik Tillman, who was also on the scoresheet for the Dutch giants. He how has five goals and an assist in 10 matches, continuing his stellar start to the campaign.

For American fans, PSV is about as fun as it gets. American stars are putting up videogame numbers in the Eredivisie, and that's even before Sergino Dest returns to provide some sauce at fullback. Pepi and Tillman are thriving, and both look like players that could be poached by big teams going forward thanks to their incredible form.

Negotiations being readied for £40m Chelsea starlet with "big potential"

Whilst Chelsea have become synonymous with opening their chequebooks and spending big in the transfer market, it now appears that one player could be leaving the club this summer.

Chelsea agree deals for multiple young stars

Despite the Todd Boehly era having yet to yield any real success for Chelsea, one area they have excelled in is finding and recruiting a slew of very talented young players.

This summer has seen the theme continue with a number of highly-rated teenagers making the move to the Premier League club. One signing that looks close to completion is a deal for Boca Juniors sensation Aaron Anselmino. The 19-year-old is set to have a medical in London soon after completing a roughyl £20 million move from Boca.

19-year-old Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel is another young player in the Blues' sights with the club eager to prise the young talent away from Germany this summer.

Whilst the strategy of Boehly and Co clearly centres around signing young players, it seems that one high potential player could be leaving Stamford Bridge this summer.

Chukwuemeka wanted by European giants

As first reported by Caught Offside, AC Milan are ready to start transfer negotiations over the signing of Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka. The outlet claims that the midfielder, who has a £40m release clause, is primarily a loan target, however the Serie A runners-up would be willing to insert a clause to buy the 20-year-old into any agreement.

This development follows news from last month that Milan were interested in agreeing a loan-to-buy deal for the midfielder, however they had yet to ready serious talks until now.

Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.

Caught Offside now reports that Milan are ready to open negotations and are willing to pay around £20 million for the 20-year-old, a far cry from the exit clause inserted into his current deal at Stamford Bridge. It is understood that Chukwuemeka currently favours staying at Chelsea despite his playing time being limited in recent seasons.

Chukwuemeka arrived in West London in a £20 million move from Aston Villa back in 2022. The 20-year-old has managed just 27 appearances for the Blues across his two seasons with the club as he has struggled for gametime in Chelsea's midfield.

Despite his recent issues, Chukwuemeka arrived at Stamford Bridge with high expectations. Upon leaving Villa Park, former Villans' boss Steven Gerrard spoke highly of the then teenager, telling the press: "I really enjoyed working with Carney, he’s obviously a big talent, someone who’s got big potential,

"I think the Academy boys and when we came in, we worked ever so hard to work on his development and shape him, try and polish him up, so Chelsea are getting a big talent."

Whilst it is uncertain what the future holds for Chukwuemeka, it is clear that if his ambition is for more game time he will likely have to leave Chelsea this summer.

South Africa seal victory and 2-0 series win despite Dimuth Karunaratne's battling hundred

Sri Lanka lose last six wickets for 35 runs before openers wrap up comfortable win

Andrew Fidel Fernando05-Jan-2021Any momentum Sri Lanka had gained on day two, they squandered within the first 90 minutes of day three, losing their last six wickets for 35 runs as South Africa’s quicks hunted relentlessly. Very briefly, there was the joy of Dimuth Karunaratne getting to his first hundred in South Africa, but this soon gave away to despair.Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi and Lutho Sipamla each produced menacing spells to ensure Sri Lanka would make no more than 62 in the morning session, leaving South Africa with just 67 to get. They hurtled to the target in 13 overs either side of lunch, with all ten wickets intact, sealing an emphatic 2-0 series victory.Related

Moonda: SA's collapse exposes familiar faultlines

Having begun in credit after their efforts the previous afternoon, there was mild hope that Sri Lanka would set a tricky target, particularly with Karunaratne appearing assured in the early overs. He started on 91, and struck consecutive fours in the third over of the day to raise his first century outside Sri Lanka since 2017, and his tenth overall. But he had been occasionally troubled by the bounce Nortje was generating, at a rapid pace, and it was this extra bounce that brought his downfall on 103. Nortje pitched one just back of a length, and angled it into Karunaratne from around the wicket. The batsman attempted to swat it to the leg side, and the ball sailed off the top edge into the hands of square leg.Overnight partner Nirsoshan Dickwella had been far less secure during his innings and was himself out the next over, a ball from Ngidi ballooning off his leading edge to cover as he attempted to work it to leg. He was out for 36, and the remaining wickets didn’t take long to follow. Dasun Shanaka spooned Wiaan Mulder to mid-on. Wanindu Hasaranga played a startlingly awful heave against Sipamla and was bowled. Then in his next over, Sipamla claimed the two remaining wickets in the space of three balls.Dimuth Karunaratne brought up his tenth Test century on the third morning•AFP via Getty ImagesNgidi finished with 4 for 44, having also been excellent in the third session on day two. Sipamla picked up three, continuing a habit of wiping out the lower order in this series. It was Nortje’s key wicket of Karunaratne, though, that swung the game definitively in South Africa’s favour.Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram then set South Africa confidently on track to their target in the five overs before lunch. Markram, who had the majority of the strike, did have one scare, when he edged Vishwa Fernando low towards the slip cordon. Kusal Mendis dived across to make what initially seemed like a good catch, only for replays to show that he may have grounded the ball briefly. The third umpire ultimately ruled it not out. After the break, the pair cruised happily to the target. Elgar’s batting was especially sprightly, as he made 31 not out off 27. Markram finished unbeaten on 36 off 53.Sri Lanka may take very mild encouragement from the fact that they made South Africa bat twice for the first time in three matches at the Wanderers, and that their second-innings 211 was their highest total at this venue. The overall vibe from the tour, however, will be one of frustration that so many of their best players were injured, and disappointment that they could not scrap as hard as they had on their previous Test tour to the country.

BCB confirms Bangladesh will also host England and New Zealand in 2021

Formal announcements to be made once tour dates are confirmed by the boards

Mohammad Isam10-Feb-2021Following news that Australia will tour Bangladesh ahead of this year’s T20 World Cup, BCB’s chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury has said that they will also host England and New Zealand. He, however, said that formal announcements will only be made once the tour dates are confirmed by the boards.Chowdhury had said that Australia would play three T20Is as well as a two-match Test series in Bangladesh. But since CA and BCB couldn’t quite fit in the Tests, they have found time for an extra T20I match.”Both boards (CA and BCB) have agreed in principle for Australia’s tour of Bangladesh before the World Cup T20, which is going to be held in October,” Chowdhury said. “It has been scheduled as such. Ahead of the World Cup T20, England, Australia and New Zealand will tour Bangladesh, but a tri-series hasn’t yet been decided.”I think we had a commitment with Australia that they would play two Tests and two T20Is. Since we could fit the T20s we will increase it to three. It is not that it is replacing anything. We would have fit in a Test match if there was enough space. It will be a good preparation for us ahead of the World T20. We have an opportunity to play some high-profile teams.”According to the ICC’s published FTP, England are scheduled to tour Bangladesh in October to play three ODIs (as part of the ICC’s ODI Super League) and three T20Is.Meanwhile, Chowdhury added that all teams can fit in their World Test Championship matches until April after the timeline was extended from March. As such, the BCB is working on a tour of Sri Lanka to play the three-match Test series that was postponed twice last year.”It should be clarified that most of the FTP commitments currently are for the World Test Championships and the ODI competition (ODI Super League). There’s a guideline to complete the WTC matches before the final in June. The guideline to arrange those matches has been extended to April, from March.”To fit in these postponed series, both teams have to be available. At the moment only Sri Lanka is available till April. It is not possible to fit in the rest of the (postponed) matches. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are free in April so we are trying to schedule the two or three Tests of the WTC during that time.”

With that in mind, Amorim cannot begin work in Manchester on his intended start date. Until clearance has been received, the 39-year-old will be unable to oversee official duties – including training sessions with the squad that he has inherited.

His first game in charge of United will not be taken in until the Red Devils pay a visit to Premier League new boys Ipswich on November 24, although he will certainly want to get his feet under the desk well before that date.

Amorim, who won his final game as Sporting boss 4-2 and was treated to an emotional farewell by players and fans, has said of the challenge that he is taking on: “I feel ready for the new challenge. I’m not naive, I know it’s going to be very different, very difficult. I’m at peace now, I can focus on my new job and I’m looking forward to starting. Spurs planning talks to sign exciting £25m rival to Brennan Johnson

There is less than a month until the Premier League returns, and while Tottenham Hotspur have already made the exciting signing of Archie Gray this summer, they'll need to bring in more players to help Ange Postecoglou realise his ambitions in North London.

The Australian led the Lilywhites to Europa League qualification last season, but with a few more quality players in the squad, it could have been the Champions League.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

Fortunately, Daniel Levy and Co appear to be hard at work as, based on recent reports, the club are in the running to land a player who shone at Euro 2024 and would be the ideal rival for Brennan Johnson on the right.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Turkish publication Sabah Spor, Tottenham are one of several sides keen on landing Galatasaray star Baris Alper Ylimaz's services this summer.

Alongside the Lilywhites, the report claims that Arsenal are set to meet with the player's representatives to discuss a possible transfer. At the same time, Manchester United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Liverpool and Aston Villa are said to be 'closely following the player.'

While this level of interest in the 24-year-old is far from ideal for Levy and Co, the good news is that should they wish to pursue this transfer further, they will only need to make an offer in the region of €30m, which is about £25m, to secure the player's services.

It could be a complicated deal to get over the line, but based on Yilmaz's performances for Galatasaray and Turkey, it is worth pursuing – especially as he could help get even more out of Johnson.

How Yilmaz compares to Johnson

Now, if Spurs can get ahead of the chasing pack and bring the talented Yilmaz to the white side of North London this summer, they'll have an exciting attacker who has shown an ability to play on either the right or left wing at their disposal.

Baris Alper Yilmaz for Galatasaray.

However, throughout last season, it became increasingly apparent that his best position is off the right, as he started 27 games there as opposed to 12 on the left. Should he move to N17, this would likely see him compete with Johnson for a place in the starting lineup.

So, with that in mind, how do the pair stack up against one another? Well, when it comes to the most important metric of all, output, it's rather close.

For example, the former Nottingham Forest ace scored five goals and provided ten assists in 38 appearances for the North Londoners, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 2.53 games.

In contrast, the Turkish superstar, whom Virgil van Dijk claimed was "difficult for every defender" to face, produced more goal involvements – seven goals and 12 assists – but did so in 55 appearances, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 2.89 games.

Ultimately, while it could prove challenging to land the Gala ace, the fact he managed to produce similar attacking numbers to Johnson shows that he'd be an ideal rival for the Welshman and the perfect option for Postecoglou to use off the bench or even from the start.

Moreover, his positional versatility could also see him used as a backup option for Son Heung-min or Timo Werner on the left, making his signature one worth fighting for.

Dream Kilman replacement: Wolves could sign "incredible" £8.5m titan

Wolverhampton Wanderers sold Max Kilman to West Ham United over three weeks ago, collecting a £40m fee for their captain, who has now reunited with former boss Julen Lopetegui.

Where's the panic? In an alternate reality, trepidation would be setting in as Wolves look destined for a season of struggle, having lost their defensive linchpin, but Gary O'Neil has worked wonders in cultivating a positive, enthusiastic team drilled in togetherness and shaped by sharp tactical understanding. There's no need for panic.

Sporting director Matt Hobbs has addressed pressing concerns early on, welcoming Jorgen Strand Larsen to the frontline, tying down Tommy Doyle to a permanent deal and layering the squad with youthful buttressing through signings of Rodrigo Gomes, 21, and 18-year-old full-back Pedro Lima.

Wolves boss Gary O'Neil

However, the fact remains that Kilman needs replacing, but that precious Old Gold is in good hands and there is confidence that the right deal will be done.

Wolves transfer news

According to a report from German outlet Wetterauer Zeitung over the weekend, Wolves are still interested in signing Nico Elvedi after failing in a bid last summer, and could now move to sign the Swiss defender following Kilman's sale, attracted by his £8.5m release clause.

Having amassed 303 appearances for his German Bundesliga outfit, notching 25 goal contributions, the 6 foot 2 defender is itching for a new challenge and could find the perfect project in O'Neil's Wolves, especially considering his stylistic similarities to the departed Kilman.

Kilman, praised as a "monster" by presenter Tom Parker in the past, is a sound centre-back but has a unique element to his craft in that he is an adept ball carrier, able to penetrate the opposing lines with his forward drives.

And after all, Elvedi is much more than just an impressive dribbler. As per Sofascore, the £57k-per-week star completed 89% of his passes in the German top flight last year, averaging 4.6 ball recoveries and 4.8 clearances per game and remarkably winning 70% of his ground duels.

Such numbers speak of Elvedi's dynamism and robust approach to his defending, covering much ground and rebuffing danger with a frightening regularity.

nico-elvedi-premier-league-everton-transfers

Kilman isn't exactly just a good ball progressor either, averaging 4.7 recoveries and clearances per game in the Premier League last season and winning 63% of his duels, but this simply serves to deepen the argument that, yes, the Gladbach defender would be a worthy successor.

Once hailed as “incredible” by former Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl, Elvedi would be a creditable signing to shrewdly replace Kilman. At a bargain £8.5m figure, it's surely a no-brainer.

They chased 395 to win the first Test, inspired by Kyle Mayers’ debut double century, before clinching a 17-run victory in the second match.”We all believe that Kraigg is the right man to lead our Test side at this point in time and I’m delighted that he has accepted the role,” Harper said. “In the recent Test series against Bangladesh, Kraigg was able to motivate his players to play to a very high level and create the culture we are looking to establish where the team showed a collective determination to fight and a real hunger for success.”Holder, 29, who is among the game’s leading allrounders with a Test batting average of 32.04 and a bowling return of 27.94, captained West Indies in 37 Tests since taking over in 2015 with 11 wins, five draws and 21 defeats.”On behalf of CWI, I would like to thank Jason for all he has given to the game in the region while serving as Captain of our Test team,” Jimmy Adams, CWI director of cricket, said. “Throughout his five-and-a-half-year tenure, he has led with dignity while always upholding the highest values of the sport. As the world’s leading Test allrounder, we all believe that Jason still has a tremendous role to play in West Indies Test cricket for many years to come.”West Indies squad: Kraigg Brathwaite, Jermaine Blackwood, Nkrumah Bonner, Darren Bravo, John Campbell, Rahkeem Cornwall, Joshua Da Silva, Shannon Gabriel, Jason Holder, Alzarri Joseph, Kyle Mayers, Kemar Roach, Jomel Warrican
