State Bank, PIA enter semis

A round-up of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Silver League quarterfinals that ended on November 25, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Nov-2014Strong performances from the bowlers and an unbeaten century from captain Usman Salahuddin helped State Bank of Pakistan rout Khan Research Laboratories by an innings and 47 runs to enter the semi-finals of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Silver League.Pacer Rizwan Haider and left-arm spinner Zafar Gohar led the charge for State Bank in the first innings, taking four wickets apiece to dismiss KRL for 176. In reply, State Bank were reeling at 61 for 5 before Salahuddin strung together key partnerships to lift them to 394. His unbeaten 154 was supported by fifties from Mukhtar Ahmed (61) and Haider (54). Legspinner Usama Mir was the most successful bowler for KRL taking 4 for 133 in his second first-class match.KRL could neither wipe out the deficit nor could they better their first-innings score, folding for 171 as the left-arm spinners Gohar (3-48) and Kashif Bhatti (4-45) took seven wickets between them. In an innings dotted with single-digit scores, Ali Khan’s 73, Shoaib Ahmed’s 47 and Zulfiqar Jan’s 31 were the only substantial knocks.Pakistan International Airlines also made their way into the semi-finals, rallying around after a first-innings collapse to beat Bahawalpur Stags by six wickets in a low-scoring game. They will meet State Bank of Pakistan in the first semi-final from November 28.The bowlers forged PIA’s fightback after their batsmen had collapsed from 80 for 4 to 104 all out in response to Stags’ first-innings score of 137. Led by medium-pacer Kamran Sajid, who took four wickets in each innings, PIA skittled Stags out for 96 in the second innings. That left PIA a target of 130 and they were struggling at 47 for 4 before an 85-run partnership between Fahad Iqbal and Faisal Iqbal ensured their passage to the semis. Faisal struck an unbeaten 52 off 55 balls, while Fahad remained not out on 38 off 68 balls. The pace-bowling pair of Ansar Javed and Zahir Siddiqi had posed the biggest threat for PIA. They took four wickets apiece during PIA’s first-innings, the only Stags bowlers to take wickets, and struck again to put PIA’s chase in a precarious position.

Petersen leads Somerset home

Alviro Petersen hit a match-winning half-century as Somerset made it maximum points from their first two Friends Life t20 games with a six-wicket victory over Northamptonshire at Taunton.

07-Jul-2013Somerset 155-4 (Petersen 64*, Trego 41, Willey 2-19) beat Northamptonshire 152-7 (Willey 47, Thomas 3-33) by three runs
ScorecardMarcus Trescothick has suffered two successive first-ballers for Somerset but he could celebrate victory all the same•Getty ImagesAlviro Petersen hit a match-winning half-century as Somerset made it maximum points from their first two Friends Life t20 games with a six-wicket victory over Northamptonshire at Taunton. The hosts reached a target of 153 with seven balls to spare with Petersen finishing unbeaten on 64 off 35 balls having struck seven fours and two sixes.Peter Trego contributed 41 for the victors, while David Willey was the pick of the Northamptonshire attack with two for 19 from four overs.Willey was also the mainstay of his side’s batting after they had won the toss in glorious sunshine. He made 47, but the visitors found it difficult to gain momentum as Alfonso Thomas claimed 3 for 33.Yasir Arafat had set the tone for a tight Somerset bowling effort by making the first over of the Northants innings a maiden to Richard Levi. By the end of the six powerplay overs the visitors were 29 for one as Steve Kirby and Thomas maintained a grip.Former Somerset player Cameron White and skipper Alex Wakely both carelessly gifted catches to cover and it was left to Willey, who announced his intentions by pulling his first ball for Kirby over mid-wicket for six, to bolster the Northamptonshire total. He faced only 29 balls, hitting four fours and two sixes, but lacked support.Northamptonshire’s total looked 30 below par in such ideal batting conditions and Somerset paced their reply perfectly, despite losing skipper Marcus Trescothick for his second duck in as many games, caught at slip off a Willey lifter. It was 50 for two when Craig Kieswetter was caught at long-on to give Willey another wicket, but Trego and Petersen then added 40 in less than five overs while taking few risks.Trego was never at his most fluent and eventually fell lbw to the left-arm spin of Graeme White, having faced 42 balls and hit four boundaries and a six.Petersen scored off virtually every ball he faced and accelerated just when the situation demanded. Jos Buttler helped supply the finishing touch after JamesHildreth had been run out.

'We nailed it in Hyderabad' – Ashwin

A few tweaks to his bowling technique after a poor England series helped R Ashwin recover his form, the offspinner said after India won the fourth Test against Australia in Delhi

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Mar-2013A few tweaks to his bowling technique after a poor home series against England have helped R Ashwin recover his form, he said after India won the fourth Test against Australia in Delhi.Ashwin finished as the highest wicket-taker in the series with 29 scalps, at 20.10 – a turnaround from his performance during the England Tests, when he finished with 14 wickets at 52.64.”Actually, my delivery stride was too long and it got worse during the Test series against England,” he said. “I had to sit back and work on the videos and I was lucky to have a coach (Sunil Subramaniam) who identified the problem pretty quickly. Credit also goes to Duncan Fletcher and Joe Dawes. I needed a kick on my backside and they gave me one.”This was the first series that India won with a margin of 4-0 and Ashwin believes the critical moment of the series came in Hyderabad, where India thumped Australia by an innings and 135 runs. “Dhoni’s double hundred (in Chennai) gave us the perfect start to the series, but we nailed it in Hyderabad,” he said. “It was one-sided and we did it in an innings.”Ashwin was happy with his performance during the Delhi Test and said that he enjoyed bowling on a wicket that was “as tricky for the bowlers as it was for the batsmen”. He also praised Cheteshwar Pujara for his unbeaten 82 that was central to the Indian chase on the third day.”You didn’t know which ball was going to bounce and turn and which one was going to scoot along the surface. You had to try and make sure you increased your pace so that the batsman didn’t have time to adjust. It was easier on the third day, compared to the previous evening. Having said that, the chase was tricky and I think Pujara deserves a lot of credit for what he did today, in spite of batting with a fractured finger.”He also stressed the value of Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling in the context of the game. “He (Jadeja) definitely knows what he’s doing and he’s pretty consistent. He’s caused a lot of trouble to the frontline Australian batsmen and I think he deserved the Man-of-the-Match award he got today. It was a fantastic second spell that he bowled today.”Ashwin, who plays for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, said he was keen to carry this momentum into the Twenty20 tournament and later into the Champions Trophy. “Cricket is a game where you can take form into any format,” he said. “Any kind of rhythm or momentum helps. For instance, when we went into the last IPL, we had lost a lot of games in Australia and we were being put down. The last IPL was probably one of the toughest that I played. This year, the momentum is going to take us forward into the IPL and later on into the Champions Trophy. Hopefully, everyone can stay mentally and physically fresh.”

Denly leads MCC fightback

Joe Denly struck an unbeaten century to bring an element of competition to the Champion Counnty match in Abu Dhabi

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Mar-2013
ScorecardJoe Denly struck an unbeaten century to bring an element of competition to the Champion County match against Warwickshire in Abu Dhabi. After being made to follow on, Sam Northeast and Peter Trego also added half-centuries as MCC closed 123 runs behind with six second-innings wickets standing.Having resumed in a parlous state on 73 for 7, MCC were dismissed for 130. Denly returned after retiring with illness earlier in the innings and top-scored with 47, putting on 52 with James Middlesbrook, before Oliver Hannon-Dalby took the last two wickets to fall in consecutive deliveries. Denly was quickly back out in the middle, as Jimmy Adams departed for 4, but a 156-run partnership for the second wicket with Northeast helped ease MCC away from total embarrassment.”It’s been a good day,” Denly said. “I was disappointed to get out in the first innings the way I did, but I was very happy to spend some time out there second time around and get some runs. I didn’t really notice any change in the conditions during the day. Under the lights it skidded on a bit quicker, but this actually helped it to come on the bat quite nicely. In terms of the ball moving sideways or swinging, it was pretty consistent all day.”Chris Wright, who claimed 5 for 35 in the first innings, removed Northeast on the brink of tea and Dale Benkenstein fell to the first ball after the resumption but Denly batted gamely on and was involved in an unbroken stand of 79 with Trego during the evening session. The MCC batsmen were not unduly troubled second time around, although they still have some work to do to avoid defeat after conceding a first-innings deficit of 431.”If we can get another couple of big partnerships tomorrow to keep them out in the field for a bit longer, hopefully we can come away with a positive result,” Denly said.Warwickshire were forced to bring on Peter McKay as a substitute wicketkeeper after Tim Ambrose sustained a strain early in MCC’s second innings, while left-arm spinner Paul Best also left the field with a back injury after bowling just eight overs and taking the wicket of Adams.

SL await trial by pace in Christchurch

New Zealand might be the favourites for the Boxing Day Test in Christchurch, but Sri Lanka too would be equally confident after strong showing in Tests over the year

The Preview by Andrew Fidel Fernando25-Dec-20142:17

McCullum wary of SL’s overseas form

Match factsDecember 26-30, 2014
Start time 1100 local (2200 GMT December 25)Big PictureThings that are less green than this Hagley Oval surface in the approach to the Test: Kermit the frog, the Kyoto protocol, Sri Lanka’s seam attack. It’s not that New Zealand don’t rate Sri Lanka in seaming conditions. At least, they have not outwardly said they don’t. They just rate themselves more. With an outswing bowler in Tim Southee, and inswinging left-armer in Trent Boult, a hit-the-deck seamer in Doug Bracewell, and a tearaway in Neil Wagner, New Zealand possess a fast-bowling full house. Of course they rate themselves.Previous Sri Lanka teams might have been perturbed by the hue of the surface, and the talk from the opposition, but this side is singing a more confident song. They have no quicks who have played more than 21 Tests, and four of the five fast-bowlers in the squad have played fewer than 16.But they have done it before, this year, in Dubai, Dhaka and Headingley, they say, so what of the inexperience? Sri Lanka feel they have weapons too. Maybe not the gatling guns and rocket launchers – but a more old-fashioned breed of armaments: like the katana and the shuriken. They weaken the opposition before striking hard, rather than blowing top orders away on sight. In the batting, New Zealand have the edge again, but when the opposition top order features two candidates for Test cricketer of the year, the hosts can only claim so much of an advantage. It is difficult to recall a time when Kumar Sangakkara was truly out of form. Angelo Mathews, meanwhile, is becoming one of cricket’s all-weather batsmen – as competent stonewalling on a spicy pitch, as he is attacking on a dustbowl.New Zealand, meanwhile, have Kane Williamson in imperious touch, and Ross Taylor not trailing far behind. As India found out early in the year, Brendon McCullum is capable of monster innings, as well as the momentum-pinching slap-dash fifties. The hosts are clear favourites, largely by dint of familiarity with the conditions. But in 2014, Sri Lanka have begun to build a reputation as a decent traveling team, and they are desperate to protect that.A green Hagley Oval pitch two days out from Boxing day•ESPNcricinfo LtdForm guide(last five matches, most recent first)

Sri Lanka: WWDLW
In the spotlightKane Williamson has been New Zealand’s long-term batting investment, and in 2014, he has proved to be the ace-in-the-hole the team had hoped he would become. He averages 60.28 in eight Tests this year, and has doubled his century-count to eight. He is coming off a rich tour in the UAE in all formats, and if Sri Lanka’s spinners ever become relevant in this tour, he is the New Zealand batsman best-placed to counter it.Angelo Mathews was named captain of the ICC XI this year, but no one is more aware than the man himself that the greatest tests for his leadership are to come. Mathews has had perhaps the best support network of any international captain in his 18 months at the helm, with Mahela Jayawardene’s tactical acumen to call upon, as well as Rangana Herath and Kumar Sangakkara’s experience. Now, with Jayawardene retired and Herath ruled out of the first Test, Mathews has lost a good portion of his safety net. It will be intriguing to see if he will continue in the aggressive vein he has recently developed, or slip back into the conservatism that marked the early part of his captaincy.Teams newsSri Lanka have plenty of options with their attack, with Shaminda Eranga and Suranga Lakmal the only certainties to play. Dhammika Prasad is the most likely third seamer, but Nuwan Pradeep may be an option as well. Then they have to make a decision between uncapped Tharindu Kaushal’s big turn, and Dilruwan Perera’s control.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Dimuth Karunaratne, 2 Kaushal Silva, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Lahiru Thirimanne, 5 Angelo Mathews (capt.), 6 Dinesh Chandimal, 7 Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 8 Tharindu Kaushal/Dilruwan Perera, 9 Dhammika Prasad, 10 Shaminda Eranga, 11 Suranga LakmalBrendon McCullum has virtually confirmed offspinner Mark Craig will play, despite the green surface, so the major question will be whether Bracewell or Wagner gets the nod as the third seamer. The top order is fairly settled, with Dean Brownlie more likely to slot into the middle order than for Hamish Rutherford to occupy a place at the top.New Zealand: (probable) 1 Tom Latham, 2 Brendon McCullum, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Dean Brownlie, 6 James Neesham , 7 BJ Watling (wk), 8 Mark Craig, 9 Doug Bracewell/Neil Wagner, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Trent BoultPitch and conditionsThe pitch is positively leafy, with bounce and pace as well, according to the groundsman. Sri Lanka can expect a trial by pace. The skies should be clear for the first two days as well, and while the weather is not quite balmy, even the Sri Lanka players probably won’t need their sweaters.Stats and trivia The Boxing Day Test is the first of its kind in New Zealand, in 11 years. It is also the first Test in Christchurch since 2006. Sri Lanka were the tourists on that last occasion as well. Angelo Mathews averages 86.62 from 13 matches as captain. Sri Lanka’s first ever overseas series win came in New Zealand, when they won one match and drew the other in 1995, but have since won only one more game in six attempts. That win came in Wellington in 2006.Quotes”The style of cricket that we’re playing, over the last 18 months or so, is something that the country enjoys. They also enjoy the fact that we are going to fight hard and make it tough for opposition teams to beat us, if they do beat us. They also see the hard work and characteristics of the team that fights all the way coming through. We’ve seen the groundswell of public support for this team, and I don’t think it’s just because of results. It’s because of the personalities that we have and the style of cricket we’re playing, and the humbleness we play it in.”
“We had a very green wicket in the Queenstown practice match as well, and I think that was really good. That really helps you to get into the mindset of playing on these conditions, whether you are a batsman or a bowler.”

Tough contest looms in UAE heat

ESPNcricinfo’s preview to the first ODI between Pakistan and Australia in Sharjah

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale28-Aug-2012Match factsShahid Afridi needs three more wickets to reach 350 in ODIs, and he is the leading wicket taker among current one-day international players•AFPAugust 28-29, 2012
Start time 1800 (1400 GMT)
Big PictureAustralia’s one-off entrée against Afghanistan now complete, it’s time for the main course in the UAE: a three-match ODI series followed by three Twenty20s against Pakistan. That the series is even going ahead is a credit to both countries, for finding a venue and a suitable time proved harder than anyone could have imagined. Initially, Sri Lanka was to host the matches but the scheduling of the SLPL at the same time scuppered that plan. Malaysia was considered, with the heat in the UAE at this time of year making it unsuitable for day-time play, but in the end the boards agreed to play in the UAE with a 6pm start for the ODIs, to avoid the hottest part of the afternoon. The conditions and the likelihood of turning pitches will give Pakistan a good chance of breaking their ten-year drought without a one-day series win against Australia. Not that Pakistan have been in particularly good one-day form: they lost a series to Sri Lanka in June and to England in the UAE in February. Australia are similarly struggling in the 50-over format; having been soundly beaten by England they slipped to fourth on the ICC one-day rankings, and could fall further if they lose to Pakistan, who are sixth. Both sides are without some senior players: Pakistan have dropped Umar Gul and Younis Khan, and Australia are missing Clint McKay due to injury and Shane Watson, who is being rested to allow him more time for strength and conditioning work ahead of a busy schedule. Pakistan are expected to use a spin-heavy attack in this first match, while Australia have decided to rely on pace, having seen the ball swing in their win against Afghanistan.Form guide (Complete matches, most recent first)Pakistan LLLWW
Australia WLLLLWatch out forIt’s nearly 18 months since Kamran Akmal last played for his country in any format, in the World Cup semi-final loss to India. Since then, Pakistan have rotated through four different wicketkeepers in ODIs, including Kamran’s brothers Adnan Akmal and Umar Akmal. Now it is his turn again. Kamran’s batting is always a threat, although in 15 ODIs he has only once scored more than 50 against Australia, but it’s his glovework that often lets the team down. As part of the squad for this tour and the ICC World Twenty20, he needs to find his best form with both bat and gloves over the next month.By promoting himself to No.3, Michael Clarke has said that he is the man to fix Australia’s batting black hole. In the past year, Australia have used Clarke, Ricky Ponting, Peter Forrest, Shane Watson, Matthew Wade and George Bailey at first drop, for a combined average of 23.37. Against Afghanistan Clarke made 75 and it was a positive sign, and he will be aiming to keep that form going against Pakistan. Batting high up also gives Clarke a chance to bat for a long period against what is likely to be a spin-heavy attack, and he is the best equipped of Australia’s batsmen to handle such bowling.Team newsPakistan have taken a 16-man squad for the ODIs but there was no room for Umar Gul or Younis Khan, while Kamran Akmal was brought back into the side. The exact make-up of the attack remains uncertain, but the coach Dav Whatmore indicated they would rely largely on the slow bowlers. “We are going to bowl more spin than the quicks,” Whatmore said, “and it’s important that we do that well.”Pakistan (squad) Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Nasir Jamshed, Mohammad Hafeez, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, Umar Akmal, Kamran Akmal (wk), Shahid Afridi, Sohail Tanvir, Aizaz Cheema, Saeed Ajmal, Imran Farhat, Shoaib Malik, Abdur Rehman, Junaid Khan, Anwar AliAustralia have made one change from the side that beat Afghanistan, leaving out their frontline spinner Xavier Doherty. The allrounder Daniel Christian will take his place, meaning plenty of seam-bowling options for Michael Clarke, while the spin duties will be shared by Glenn Maxwell, David Hussey and Clarke himself. It remains to be seen whether Matthew Wade will open or be moved down the order to give him some respite from the heat.Australia 1 Matthew Wade (wk), 2 David Warner, 3 Michael Clarke (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 David Hussey, 6 George Bailey, 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 Daniel Christian, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 James PattinsonPitch and conditionsThe humid conditions allowed Australia’s fast bowlers to extract plenty of swing at the same venue against Afghanistan, but Pakistan’s spinners should also find the conditions to their liking. The temperature, even late at night, is not expected to fall below 33C.Stats and trivia Shahid Afridi needs three more wickets to reach 350 in one-day internationals; now that Brett Lee has retired, Afridi is the leading wicket taker among current ODI cricketers The last one-day international Australia played against Pakistan in the UAE was just over three years ago, yet only one member of that Australia side – Michael Clarke – will take the field in this game Should Australia lose the series 2-1 they won’t move on the ICC one-day rankings, but if they lose 3-0 they will drop from fourth to sixth, swapping places with PakistanQuotes”Australia have had a retirement or two and an injury so I suppose we can have an edge to start with.”
“Both teams are keen to get some consistency, I guess, back into the one-day game. I think Pakistan are a lot like Australia in the fact that they have a lot of talent – it’s just about performing consistently.”

Bell sympathy for paying fans

With England leaving out three frontline bowlers for the final one-day international against West Indies the issue the issue of rotation has again been brought to the fore

Andrew McGlashan20-Jun-2012With England leaving out three frontline bowlers for the final one-day international against West Indies the issue of rotation has again been brought to the fore. It has ignited the debate about whether the game is being cheapened, especially for those who have paid considerable amounts for tickets to the match at Headingley.Stuart Broad, Tim Bresnan and Graeme Swann – the three players missing Friday’s ODI – are the only first-choice picks across all three formats for England following Kevin Pietersen’s limited-overs retirement and Ian Bell, who is now back in the 50-over side as Pietersen’s replacement, understands that some of the public will be disappointed at not seeing a number of the star names.”Of course, I have some sympathy,” said Bell. “It has slightly weakened our attack, but I still think it is a team that can go out and beat West Indies. There’s no doubt people want to come to see the Broads, Andersons and Bresnans. But they will be seeing young, exciting guys who will be big players for England over the next few years.”Andy Flower, the England coach, has been firm in his explanations of why he is taking such an approach which included resting Broad and James Anderson from the final Test against West Indies. With England facing another five ODIs against Australia, followed by a full series in all formats against South Africa, then another hectic away season he believes that key players cannot play every match.Bell agreed there was a balance to strike. “There’s a heavy schedule coming up,” he said. “We need to look after these guys. The key to our success in one-day cricket is having five out-and-out world-class bowlers. So if we want to beat the Australians, we want these guys fit and fresh and ready to go. For the three guys who play in all three forms of the game … it’s going to be crucial.”So far this season it has only been the bowlers or allrounders who have been rested although Andrew Strauss was among the first players given time off by Flower when he missed the Bangladesh tour in early 2010.Although Bell sees the merits of rotation for the bowlers he has no desire for any downtime himself, especially after hitting a rich run of form which has seen him return to ODI colours with scores of 126 and 53. One of the major reasons behind England’s defeat against Pakistan earlier this year was the rustiness of the batsmen after a two-month break, with Bell suffering particularly badly in the UAE, and he does not want to risk a repeat.”Going into the UAE series, we’d had two or three months off – and I felt I’d lost my rhythm completely,” he said. “So batting-wise, for me if I’m batting the better I play. It’s out of my control if Andy was to give me a game off. But personally, from a batting point of view, if I’m out in the middle scoring runs, I want to stay scoring runs – definitely.”

Bagai announces retirement

Ashish Bagai, the Canada captain and wicketkeeper-batsman, has announced his retirement

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Dec-2013Ashish Bagai, the Canada captain and wicketkeeper-batsman, has announced his retirement. Bagai, who will turn 32 next month, debuted for Canada back in 1999 as a 17-year old. He went on to represent his country for more than 14 years. His most recent assignment was the unsuccessful campaign in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier in the UAE, where Canada finished 12th out of 16 teams after winning only two group games. After the 2011 World Cup, Bagai left the team to attend business school. He was recalled in May this year for a nine-month period leading up to February 2014, after which he was to resume his career in finance. His inclusion came at a crucial time for Canada with two World Cup qualification campaigns lined up: the World T20 Qualifier and the 2015 World Cup Qualifier. However, after the disappointing outing in the former, and less than a month before the 2015 World Cup qualifier begins in New Zealand, Bagai tweeted that he was retiring.Bagai’s ODI debut came in Canada’s memorable win over Bangladesh in the 2003 World Cup in Durban, a memory, he tweeted, that was his one of his favourites, along with the 2009 World Cup Qualifier, where Canada finished second behind Ireland. Bagai scored 1964 runs at an average of 37.76 in 62 ODIs, and his List A career produced 2649 runs in 96 games.

Manoj Tiwary, Rohit Sharma begin with tons

A round-up of the first day of the first round of matches in the Ranji Trophy Elite 2011-12

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Nov-2011Group BSourav Ganguly scored 34 on his return to first-class cricket, and an unbeaten century from Manoj Tiwary helped carry Bengal to 261 for 4 against Gujarat at Eden Gardens. Choosing to bat, Bengal lost their openers early – Parthasarathi Bhattacharjee was caught off Priyank Panchal, while Arindam Das was run out for a duck. Captain Tiwary, batting at No. 4, built two half-century stands with Arindam Ghosh and Ganguly. The best partnership of the day, however, came from Tiwary and wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha. The pair put together an unbroken 105-run stand at over four runs an over and went to stumps on 120 and 41 respectively. Medium-pacer Panchal was the pick of the bowlers for Gujarat – who are without Siddharth Trivedi this season – claiming 2 for 22 in a miserly 13-over spell.Bengal coach Manabendra Ghosh said Tiwary ought to be given a longer run in the national side. “It’s a mental issue for Manoj. It’s not easy to score when one is looking over the shoulder all the time,” Ghosh told the . “Basically, he is a confidence player. He needs to given a longer stint in the Indian team to succeed. Besides, he also needs to tighten his defence.”Delhi struck regular blows against Haryana, to keep them to 256 for 7 at the Roshanara Club Ground. Delhi chose to bowl and left-arm spinner Vikas Mishra drew first blood, removing Nitin Saini for 14. Rajat Bhatia and Parvinder Awana were the next to strike, Awana cutting short a promising innings from Sunny Singh as Haryana slipped to 115 for 3. Abhimanyu Khod and Sachin Rana thwarted any chance of a collapse, though, with half-centuries in a 126-run stand. The pair fell to fast bowler Pradeep Sangwan late in the day, as Delhi picked up four wickets in seven overs to finish with the edge.Heavy rain washed out the first day of the Tamil Nadu v Baroda at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, without a ball being bowled.Group ADriven by Ravindra Jadeja’s 141 not out, Saurashtra piled up 305 for 5 against Orissa at the Barabati Stadium. Orissa’s Basant Mohanty justified his captain’s decision to bowl, trapping Chirag Pathak lbw off the second ball of the day. However, a string of steady stands followed, to carry Saurashtra into their position of strength. Bhushan Chauhan steered a 50-run stand for the second wicket, and then put on 142 with Ravindra Jadeja. Chauhan fell to Mohanty for 83, but yet another half-century stand followed between Jadeja and Sagar Jogiyani. Jadeja’s hundred is his fifth in first-class cricket and was studded with 17 fours and a six.Karnataka made 273 for 3 against Rajasthan at the Field Club Ground, courtesy a knock of 121 not out from opener KB Pawan. Rajasthan chose to bowl and were rewarded with the early wicket of Robin Uthappa, who was trapped lbw by Pankaj Singh for a duck. An 88-run partnership between Pawan and Manish Pandey, though, got Karnataka back on track. This was followed by an unbroken century stand between Pawan and Amit Verma, which put them on top.It was another run fest at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, with Punjab getting to 329 for 5 against Uttar Pradesh on the back of a century from Mandeep Singh. Partnerships between Karan Goel, Mandeep and Mayank Sidhana formed the backbone of the innings. The openers fell early to RP Singh, leaving Punjab 51 for 2 when Goel and Mandeep came together. The pair added 167 before Goel was caught on 68. Sidhana then put on 97 with Mandeep in quick time, before becoming RP Singh’s fourth victim. Mandeep got to stumps unbeaten on 158, which is his highest first-class score. The trend of a player hitting an unbeaten century on day one to guide their team to a position of strength extended to the Mumbai v Railways match at the Karnail Singh Stadium. Here, Rohit Sharma hit 133 not out after Mumbai decided to bat, to carry them to 338 for 5. He was well supported by Suryakumar Yadav, who made 88 in a fourth-wicket partnership of 180. Kaustub Pawar, Wasim Jaffer and Iqbal Abdulla also got starts but could not kick on, falling for scores between 25 and 33. The Railways bowlers shared the wickets around, but could not adequately control the scoring-rate: four of the six who bowled went at over four runs an over.”It’s nice to score runs at the start of the season especially since it was my comeback match and also because the conditions were extremely hard,” Rohit was quoted as saying in after the game. “The ball kept low and the pitch was extremely slow.”
